Counseling seeks to identify problem areas and foster insight leading to solutions

Who and Why: Counseling focuses on the mental and emotional wellness for individuals, couples and groups. Generally people come into counseling in a crisis mode—when their life is spinning out of control. But, some people also see a crisis looming down the road, or wish to head-off a adversity before it hits by changing a behavior, or to gain personal insight. Remember: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

Getting Started: When a new person comes for counseling, they are often referred by their insurance, friend or colleague, however new clients are welcome however they are brought to Expect Success!

What to Expect: Counseling can be very emotionally taxing and yet can be profoundly rewarding. Each client is different, and your particular challenges will be addressed specifically. A customized plan will be developed within the first few sessions. Please remember that counseling is a two-way street. You may be given reading or exercises between sessions, and you are expected to complete that work, and come on time and be “present.” During your session, you and your areas of growth will be the sole focus of our time together. I may also discreetly disclose some things about myself if I believe it can benefit you and not damage our professional relationship, nut rather deepen the trust and rapport we are building.

How long: An average length of treatment is approximately 12 sessions over the course of three months. Some situations can be resolved more quickly, and other times a client will require longer time as every client is different. Very often, I have found that clients will finish with an issue, go on their way, then resurface 6 months to a year later (or longer) with a new challenge that has arisen in their life.

Self-Esteem

Having good self-esteem is essential for success and happiness in your job, your marriage and even your health. Do you really love yourself? Do you believe in yourself? Loving yourself is the cornerstone of being able to love others. Evaluate your general level of self-esteem and determine where you can improve. Learn how to gain confidence and self-esteem and love yourself.

Depression

Are you depressed? Do you bounce from the highest highs to the lowest low? Depression can affect your ability to succeed in your job, and be a good parent or spouse. We can help you find the light at the end of the tunnel, or I can help you tell the difference between clinical depression and a bad case “of the blues.”

Depression can be caused by many things, and your unique set of circumstances will be addressed. Many people who describe themselves, or who have been clinically diagnosed as depressed feel like they have no energy, and can’t concentrate. While everyone has “down” times, if you have felt the symptoms of depression for more than two week, and that these feelings are interfering with your daily life, you may be clinically depressed.

Treating depression is especially important not only for your health, but for the well-being of those around you. Depression is treatable and your symptoms can be managed.

Marriage Counseling

Stuck in a rut? Feel like your marriage has lost its spark? If there are little issues that nag at you, or if you are teetering on the brink of divorce, now is the time to open the channels of communication and get to the root problem. Break out of the routine and improve your relationship with your partner.

Many people are hesitant to seek marriage counseling because of a perceived stigma, or because they feel it would be admitting that they have gone past the point of being able to resolve an issue themselves. Rest assured that we take your privacy and concern seriously. Many people come to Expect Success for marriage counseling before they are in crisis, but just as many come in during a period of crisis. Whatever your situation we will assess your needs and assist you in becoming aware of the things you need to work on, and bringing your marriage into a healthy place.

Does Marriage Counseling work? Yes, marriage counseling works. However it takes work to make it work. You may be asked to do exercises, be especially honest, open up in ways you haven’t and try new things, both in your marriage and in counseling. And even with full participation of both you and your spouse in counseling, it is a sad fact that sometimes marriages fail. If this is to be the case it is especially important that you have a confidant to walk with your through the healing process.
