Peter G. McGourty, LPC

A natural communicator with an entrepreneurial streak. Dreamer, conventional-eccentric & pragmatist with a passion for family and the belief in healing. Coach-counselor, hungry to teach, to learn, to guide. – A Phoenix – Believer, listener, confidant. A warm accessible light at the end of a dark and troubled tunnel… (But we just call him “Pete”).

Growing up in Toronto Canada, the third of six children in an Irish Catholic family, Pete McGourty had two passions: hockey and making a difference in the lives of others. His desire to lead, to give back in a meaningful, way manifested itself early as Pete was elected in landslide fashion as President of Michael Power High School, a student body numbering 2,100 students in Toronto.

In his youthful bliss, the pragmatic, but wily Pete never thought that his life would eventually lead him to the specialized subtle life of a Catholic priest. Yet, ten arduous years of training and two masters degrees later (philosophy and theology) Pete was ordained into the priesthood by Pope John Paul II at St Peter’s Basilica in Rome, Italy, (Pete never does anything half-way!) For the next 5 years, Pete worked dutifully as a vocational recruiter and fundraiser in Spain, Italy, Canada, Mexico and the US—experiencing marked success in both domains.

But Pete never was able to shake the feeling that he was called to have a family of his own–or the feeling that there was the “one” out there waiting for him. The path he had chosen was fulfilling, gave him many opportunities to mentor, teach and counsel, but the young Priest was still missing something in his life. So after long and careful discernment, Pete petitioned and was granted honorable discharge by Vatican authorities in 1995.

Following that transition, Pete returned to school for a Masters in Counseling, so that he could continue his vocation of ministering to people. But where Pete once focused on spiritual matters, he was now able to address a broader range of life and business challenges. As a professional counselor, and business and life coach, Pete has an enormous well on which to draw to guide and coach people in their pursuit for success: Pete knows the worlds of counseling, religion, relationships, family, not-for-profits, academia, sports—as well as unrealized dreams, callings, entrepreneurship.

Shortly after receiving his Masters in Counseling, Pete met his soul mate—a good Southern belle—got hitched, and started the family for which he had dreamed.

Now 10 years into his second career, Pete now makes his home in Fort Mill, SC with his beautiful bride, and two young sons. Let’s just say, Pete’s life has come full circle.

After working for 6 years as an agency counselor, Pete responded to yet another calling, that of owning and operating his own business, and in spite of some difficult times with the tragedy of 9/11 and the current economic slowdown, Expect Success is going strong and helping individuals, couples, and businesses to expect, pursue and obtain success.
